For most semigrating families, schooling is not one factor among many. It is the constraint that decides the town, then the suburb, then the street. Getting it wrong means either a place your child did not want or a house in the wrong catchment.
Public and independent work on different clocks
The Western Cape Education Department runs a defined admissions window for public schools, and it opens far earlier than parents moving from another province expect. Independent schools set their own timelines, and the sought-after ones often work further ahead still.
The practical consequence: by the time you have sold your house and feel ready to think about schools, the window for the following year may already have closed. Start the school conversation before the property conversation.
Feeder areas decide more than you think
Public schools prioritise learners living inside their catchment. This is the single most important thing to understand if you are moving into a town with one clearly preferred school.
- Ask the school exactly where the boundary runs. Streets, not suburbs.
- Confirm it before you sign an offer to purchase, not after.
- A confirmed address inside the area strengthens an application considerably. Some families rent inside the catchment first, then buy.
- Independent schools do not use feeder areas, which is part of why relocating families lean towards them.
Ask how many places are open in your child’s grade. Not whether applications are open. Those are different questions with very different answers.
Questions worth asking on a visit
- How many learners are in the class my child would join? Ask for the actual number in that specific grade.
- How do you settle a child who arrives mid-year? Schools that handle transfers well have a process. Schools that do not will say “they usually settle in fine”.
- What does the fee actually cover? Ask separately about textbooks, devices, tours, sport kit and aftercare.
- What is the staff turnover like? A revealing question, and one nobody prepares an answer for.
- May I visit on an ordinary day? Open days are a performance. A normal Tuesday tells you more.
Documents to have ready
- Birth certificate or passport for each child
- Immunisation records
- The last two years of school reports
- A transfer letter from the current school
- Proof of address, which is why the rent-first approach helps
- Any assessment reports if your child receives learning support
If you are moving mid-year
It is harder, but it is done constantly. Speak to the school directly rather than submitting a general online form — mid-year placements usually depend on someone knowing your file exists. Be flexible about which school, and be honest with your child about the timeline.
The cost comparison that surprises people
Independent school fees vary enormously between Western Cape towns. Schools in Garden Route and Overberg towns are typically well below equivalent institutions in Cape Town’s southern suburbs. For a number of families, that gap is the reason the shortlist extends beyond the city at all. The saving on fees funds a meaningful part of the move.
Compare like with like, and ask each school for a full annual cost including extras rather than the headline tuition figure.
