Home Services

The trades you need in the first month: someone to fix the geyser, someone to hang the gate motor, and someone who answers the phone.

Getting the first month sorted

Four things worth settling before you agree to anything.

Sort water heating and security first

These are the two things that make a new house liveable. Everything else can wait a fortnight.

Ask for a registered electrician for anything on the board

Electrical work affecting the distribution board requires a certificate of compliance. Your conveyancer will have wanted one at transfer, so keep it.

Get quotes in writing, even for small jobs

A verbal price on a callout is how small jobs become large invoices. A one-line WhatsApp quote is still a written quote.

Ask about borehole and tank water

Many coastal and small-town properties run partly off tanks or a borehole. Find out what yours does, and who services the pump, before you need to know.

Common questions

Slower than in a metro, particularly in December and January when the population of towns like Hermanus swells. Build a relationship with one before you have an emergency.

Many semigrating families do it in year two rather than month one, after they have lived through a winter and know their actual consumption.

Different, not necessarily less. Ask neighbours which armed-response company actually has vehicles in your street, rather than assuming the biggest brand covers it.

Look for a gardener who specifically knows indigenous planting. Fynbos wants poor soil and no fertiliser, and a well-meaning general gardener can kill an established bed in a season.
