Ask when applications actually close
Popular Western Cape schools take applications a full year ahead, and some close in March for the following January. If you are moving mid-year you are working against that calendar, not with it.
Ask how many places are genuinely open in your child's grade
A school can be accepting applications while having two places in Grade 6. Ask for the number, not whether the list is open.
Check the feeder-area rule
Public schools prioritise learners inside their catchment. If the school decides the suburb, confirm the boundary before you sign an offer to purchase.
Visit on an ordinary school day
Open days are a performance. Ask to walk through on a normal Tuesday morning, and pay attention to how the staff speak to the children.

As early as you possibly can — ideally a full year ahead. The Western Cape Education Department runs a defined admissions window for public schools, and independent schools set their own, often earlier.
Usually yes, but a confirmed address inside the feeder area materially strengthens a public-school application. Some families rent in the catchment first, then buy.
It varies enormously between towns. Fees in a Garden Route town are typically well below equivalent schools in Cape Town’s southern suburbs, which is one reason families look beyond the city.
Possible but harder. Speak directly to the registrar rather than applying through a general form, and have your child’s most recent reports ready.
